The Lok Sabha Speaker's decision to meet TMC leaders may delay the merger of 20 rebel MPs with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).

The meeting follows a letter from TMC floor leader Abhishek Banerjee, asking the speaker not to recognize any faction of the TMC.

Speaker Om Birla will take a call on the merger issue after hearing both sides, as per a senior official.

The TMC has been facing dissidence and defections after being defeated by the BJP in the state elections.

The merger with NCPI will increase the BJP-led NDA's strength in the Lok Sabha, but the TMC leaders have welcomed the meeting, calling it a part of the standard protocol.
