The Supreme Court of India has directed the Centre to extend the revision of textbooks containing legal studies and judiciary aspects to all classes, not just Class 8.
A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made this order after being informed that an oversight committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra is already in place to suggest the framing of curriculum on legal studies and judiciary for Class 8 and above.
The Centre, represented by Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, informed the court that the committee will collaborate with the National Judicial Academy at Bhopal for the revision and finalisation of the curriculum.
The court had earlier raised concerns over the composition of the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) and had sought changes after a reference to 'corruption in judiciary' in a Class 8 Social Science textbook was found to present a distorted image about the judiciary.
