Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has agreed to consider a plea to display the National Emblem of India on the main dome of the Supreme Court, albeit on an administrative basis.

A bench comprising CJI Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi observed that the matter fell within the administrative domain of the Chief Justice and companion judges.

The court directed the secretary general of the Supreme Court to prepare a note and place it before the competent authority, the Chief Justice of India, to deal with the issue administratively.

The National Emblem features four Asiatic lions standing back-to-back, mounted on a circular abacus, with the Ashoka Chakra at the centre and the motto "Satyameva Jayate" inscribed below.

The plea, filed by Badaravada Venugopal, sought a direction to the Union government and the Supreme Court administration to ensure statutory and constitutional compliance in displaying the National Emblem on the principal architectural feature of the court building.
