The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition challenging the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act, citing its potential to undermine the federal structure and Centre-state distribution of powers.
The petition, filed by a Kerala-based lawyer, questions the arbitrary nature of provisions in the 2008 Act that allow NIA to take over cases probed by state police without consent.
A bench of justices has issued a notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking a response within four weeks, with the matter set to be heard on July 14.
