The Supreme Court has refused to cancel the bail of Akashdeep Karaj Singh, one of the accused in the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. The court observed that the Bombay High Court's order granting bail was 'well-reasoned' and did not warrant reversal.
The high court had granted bail to Singh, 22, in February, making him the first accused to secure relief in the case. The court had found significant gaps in the prosecution's case, including a lack of evidence linking Singh to the crime.
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed by Shehzeen Ziauddin Siddique, the widow of the deceased leader, challenging the relief granted to Singh. The court cautioned against a sweeping approach in criminal cases and noted that the high court had applied its mind extensively while granting bail.
The case relates to the killing of Siddique, a three-time MLA who was shot dead outside his son's office in Mumbai's Bandra (East) area in October 2024. The police have arrested 26 persons in connection with the case and filed a chargesheet.
