The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has responded to a Madurai court's verdict in the 2020 custodial death case of a father-son duo in Tamil Nadu. Nine police officials from the Sathankulam police station were sentenced to death for allegedly assaulting P Jayaraj and his son J Bennix.
The court observed that the police had destroyed the foundation of an entire family by killing both the father and the son. It emphasized that the punishment must be severe enough to prevent such incidents in the future.
The court awarded capital punishment to all nine convicted policemen, including former inspector S Sridhar, former sub-inspectors Balakrishnan and Raghu Ganesh, and head constables Murugan and Saamidurai.
In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a total fine of ₹1.40 crore as compensation to the victims' family.
