Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the closure of over 700 liquor shops in the state within two weeks, citing the welfare of the public.

The closure affects TASMAC-run liquor shops located within 500 meters of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stations.

According to the government notice, 276 outlets near places of worship, 186 shops near educational institutions, and 255 outlets near bus stands will be closed.

This action is among the first orders by actor-turned politician Vijay after taking oath as chief minister on Sunday, May 10.

The CM has directed the execution of the order within two weeks for the welfare of the public, according to the release.
