Hyderabad, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has suggested scaling down the Greyhounds, a specialized commando force dealing with Left-Wing Extremist problems, citing a decline in Maoist activities in the state.
Speaking at the 'Telangana Police Retreat 2026' event, Reddy hinted that the 1,200 staff working in Greyhounds could be relocated to other wings of the Police department.
Reddy's suggestion comes as the Centre has set a March 31 deadline for Maoist surrenders, with 130 Maoists, including women cadre, surrendering before him on March 7.
The state's top Maoist commander, Thippiri Tirupati, also known as Devuji, surrendered on February 24, after over four decades of underground life.
However, retired senior police officials have expressed concerns that slashing the workforce from Greyhounds could lead to a shortage of trained personnel in the future.
