West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of disrespecting women and shouting at a delegation of the party, escalating tensions between the two sides.
TMC leader and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said Kumar got irritated and shouted at the delegation, accusing them of disrespecting him.
Kumar was quoted as saying that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has been completed in other states and that he is helpless, as the Supreme Court is monitoring the process in West Bengal.
Bhattacharya responded by saying that moving the Supreme Court is not a crime and that Kumar's attitude proves he does not respect women.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been at loggerheads with the TMC over the SIR, with the Supreme Court intervening to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised ahead of the assembly elections.
The ECI has assured political parties that it will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring an impartial, transparent, and fair poll.
