West Bengal police arrested five and detained two individuals for allegedly heckling and manhandling TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur on Saturday. BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar alleged the accused are Trinamool Congress workers linked to former MLA Lovely Maitra.
Abhishek Banerjee sustained minor injuries after being attacked with stones and eggs in Sonarpur, where he met families of post-poll violence victims.
Union minister Sukanta Majumdar said the accused are TMC workers, while Maitra denied the charges, claiming several women involved are active BJP workers.
TMC secretary Kunal Ghosh said arresting the accused was the right thing, but questioned why not all involved were arrested.
Abhishek Banerjee alleged BJP workers attacked his convoy, claiming it was an attempt to kill him and vowed to seek a legal solution in the Supreme Court.
