Five persons were arrested and two detained by police for allegedly heckling and manhandling Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas district's Sonarpur.

Banerjee sustained minor injuries after he was attacked with stones and eggs, prompting security personnel to intervene.

A suo motu case was registered by police, with TMC describing the incident as an attempt to murder the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member.

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar claimed the arrestees were TMC workers, while former MLA Lovely Maitra refuted the charge, saying several women active BJP workers were involved in the attack.

Banerjee was examined at two private hospitals and discharged, with doctors saying he had bruises on his chest but did not require admission.

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said she would hit the streets from June 2 with a rally in central Kolkata.
