US President Donald Trump has heaped praise on Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, while reiterating his claim of stopping Islamabad's war with India last year. The Republican leader made the comments in a Truth Social post after Pakistan hosted talks between the US and Iran to end their six-week war.

Trump called both Pakistani leaders 'extraordinary men' and claimed they 'continuously thank' him for saving 30 to 50 million lives in the 'horrendous war with India'. The US President also claimed credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, although India has repeatedly denied this.

However, the US-Iran talks have failed, with both sides blaming each other for the breakdown. The talks were the first direct US-Iranian meeting in over a decade and the highest-level discussions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Vice President JD Vance said Iran had chosen not to accept American terms, including not to build nuclear weapons. Trump later said Iran was 'unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions'. Pakistan's foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, has called for the preservation of the ceasefire.
