Police in Jammu have arrested the driver of a private bus that plunged into a 70-foot deep gorge near Ramnagar, killing 21 people on Monday.

The bus was traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur when it veered off the road and crashed, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

A team of forensic experts visited the crash site on Tuesday to investigate the cause of the accident, with initial reports suggesting that a tyre burst may have been a contributing factor.

However, Inspector Singh refused to confirm the preliminary findings, stating that it would be premature to draw any conclusions at this stage.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the bus driver under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the regional transport authority has cancelled the driver's Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) license and registration certificate of the bus.

The bus owner had hired the driver just five to six days ago, and documents accessed by HT showed that the bus owner had been issued six challans for violations such as speeding and dangerous driving in the past.
