Umar Khalid, a former JNU student, has urged the Supreme Court to allow an open court hearing in his review petition challenging the denial of bail in the alleged larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Khalid's lawyer, Kapil Sibal, requested that the review be heard in open court instead of being decided in chambers.

The Supreme Court had denied Khalid bail under the UAPA in January, holding that the material on record disclosed a prima facie case against him and co-accused Sharjeel Imam.

Khalid has been in custody since September 2020, and Imam since January 2020.

The case involves allegations of a coordinated conspiracy that culminated in communal violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020, leaving 53 people dead and hundreds injured.

Khalid and Imam are facing prosecution for allegedly being part of the conspiracy, while five co-accused were granted bail by the Supreme Court.
