The Delhi High Court has temporarily suspended the life sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP leader, in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The suspension is in effect until his appeal against the conviction and sentence is heard. Sengar has already served seven years and five months in prison, exceeding the minimum punishment prescribed under the relevant law at the time of the offense. The court directed Sengar to furnish a personal bond of ₹15 lakh and imposed several conditions, including restricting him from coming near the victim's residence and reporting to the local police station once a week. Sengar remains in jail, serving a separate 10-year sentence in the custodial death case of the rape survivor's father. The court expects the CRPF to continue providing safety to the survivor and directed the DCP to personally ensure her protection. The case has been listed before the roster bench on January 16, 2026, subject to orders of the chief justice.
