The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 10% hike in electricity bills due to rising global energy costs. The revised bills will be implemented in the June billing cycle, with consumers paying an additional 10% of their electricity usage.
The fuel surcharge, also known as the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS), will be calculated from March 2026 and charged from June 2026. The surcharge is levied on consumers to account for fluctuations in fuel and power purchase costs incurred by distribution companies.
Uttar Pradesh minister Narendra Kashyap justified the price hike, stating that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has led to a global energy crisis. He added that the Yogi Adityanath government has not raised taxes or bills in the last nine years.
The state saw a peak electricity demand of 30,339 MW this year, with temperatures in cities like Banda reaching new records.
