A political row continues between the Congress and the BJP over the United States' decision to allow India to purchase Russian oil already at sea.
The US energy secretary, Chris Wright, said the US 'reached out to friends in India' to buy the oil and bring it into their refineries, contradicting the US treasury secretary's statement that the US had given 'permission' to India to buy Russian oil.
The BJP used Wright's statement to reject accusations by the opposition, while the Congress slammed the government for 'defending American attack on our sovereignty'.
The US had granted a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil, citing a deliberately short-term measure to enable oil to keep flowing into the global market.
