The Trump administration has launched a new trade investigation into manufacturing in foreign countries, targeting 16 economies, including India. The investigation, which could lead to new import taxes, aims to address what the US sees as unfair trade practices and excess production capacity in countries like China, the European Union, and India.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the US will no longer sacrifice its industrial base to other countries that may be exporting their problems with excess capacity and production. The investigation is part of the Trump administration's efforts to reshore critical supply chains and create good-paying jobs for American workers.
India has been subject to 25% tariffs from the US, but the two countries recently announced a bilateral trade deal, which saw the US reduce its tariffs on India from 50% to 18%. The deal came after India guaranteed to reduce and halt its purchase of Russian oil.
