The number of American students studying in India has plummeted by 65.6% over the past decade, with only 1,578 US students choosing India in the 2023-24 academic year, according to data from the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Education experts attribute this decline to low global rankings of Indian universities, a rigid curriculum, and inadequate infrastructure.

India, which was once a popular destination for US students, now attracts fewer students than countries like Belize, Vietnam, and Ghana.

Meanwhile, the number of Indian students studying in the United States continues to rise, with over 3,31,602 students going to the US for higher education in 2023-24, surpassing China as the largest source of foreign students in the States.
