The main accused in the murder of a groom in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur was killed in an exchange of fire with police, authorities said.

Ravi Yadav, the accused, was on a motorcycle when he was asked to stop during vehicle checking, but he and his accomplice sped away and allegedly fired at a police team.

Yadav was critically injured in retaliatory fire and died during treatment at a hospital, while his associate managed to escape.

Police said an officer sustained a bullet injury to his hand during the exchange of fire, while another policeman narrowly escaped after a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket.

The accused conspired with the bride's cousin, Pradeep Bind, and another associate, Bhole Rajbhar, to kill the groom, Azad Bind, who was shot dead during his wedding procession on May 1.

Police said Pradeep Bind was unhappy with Bind Azad and Soni Bind's love marriage and had conspired to kill the groom.

So far, 13 people have been arrested for allegedly sheltering and assisting the accused after the murder.
