A harrowing incident unfolded on a Varkala-Kadakkavur section of the Indian railways when a Vande Bharat Express train was forced to make an emergency stop after spotting an auto rickshaw on the track near Akathumuri Halt station on Tuesday evening. At approximately 10:10 pm, the train's loco pilot, acting swiftly, applied the emergency brakes, bringing the high-speed train to a halt. The auto rickshaw was found unattended, with no signs of the driver or passengers nearby. The timely intervention of the loco pilot and the subsequent actions of the Railway Protection Force, engineering department, and local police ensured that the track and the train were secured. The auto rickshaw was safely removed from the track. Visuals from the scene showed the damaged auto rickshaw lying on the track. After a thorough check, the Vande Bharat Express resumed its journey at 11:15 pm. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported among passengers, the public, or railway staff. The train, which had been delayed, reached Thiruvananthapuram Central at 11:50 pm. The authorities credited the loco pilot's quick thinking with preventing a major accident. The driver of the auto rickshaw, identified as Sudhi, was later taken into custody by the Railway Protection Force, who suspected him of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
