India has named veteran diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as its next ambassador to China, a move seen as a significant development in the rebuilding of bilateral ties after a prolonged military face-off on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Doraiswami, who is currently the high commissioner to the United Kingdom, is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, according to a statement from the external affairs ministry.
He will replace Pradeep Rawat, who has played a key role in normalising India-China ties since the two sides ended a four-year standoff in Ladakh in October 2023.
Doraiswami has a long and distinguished career in diplomacy, having served as envoy to Uzbekistan, South Korea, and Bangladesh, among other postings.
He is known for his outreach to forces across the political spectrum, and his experience in addressing India's concerns about the activities of Khalistani elements in Britain.
Doraiswami's appointment comes at a time when India and China are engaged in rebuilding their relationship, with the two sides having revived the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and resumed direct flights.
