The Election Commission of India (EC) has announced that voting for the West Bengal assembly elections 2026 will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, along with that of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar stated that the poll body had detailed deliberation and found it necessary to reduce the number of phases to make it convenient for everyone.
The polls in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase, with voting scheduled for April 9 and results on May 4.
There are 126 assembly constituencies in Assam, 140 in Kerala, 30 in Puducherry, 234 in Tamil Nadu, and 294 in West Bengal.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that necessary action shall be taken on police officers who were found to be involved in earlier polls, and warned of strict action if any violence or inducement is noticed or reported.
