Mumbai: Abhay Singh, the top-ranked Indian squash player, has opted for the Platinum event in Hong Kong over a $15K Challenger in Chennai ahead of the Squash World Cup. The 27-year-old is looking to challenge himself against the world's best, despite being the underdog in most matches. At world No. 28, Abhay has made significant progress this year, beating world No. 5 Karim Gawad and entering the top 30. However, he knows that he needs to face tougher opponents to improve and achieve his goal of entering the top 10. Abhay's coach, James Willstrop, has been instrumental in his progress, emphasizing the importance of learning from losses and using them as opportunities to improve. The Indian player has already shown signs of improvement, taking down world No. 6 Youssef Ibrahim in a tight 3-1 contest at the Egyptian Open. Abhay's sights are now set on the Asian Games next year, where he aims to win two gold medals, including the men's team event. However, with his current rankings charge, he may need to reassess his Olympic qualification roadmap. The 2028 LA Olympics are a key target for Abhay, and he believes that his progress in the next six months will determine his chances of qualification. For Abhay, being India No. 1 is not enough; he wants to be among the world's best. 'Top 10 is the goal,' he said, emphasizing his desire to compete at the highest level.
