Indian chess prodigy Arjun Erigaisi has done it again, beating world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in the World Teams Rapid Championship in Hong Kong. This is the second time Arjun has defeated Carlsen in a faster time control, following his wins in the world rapid and blitz events last year.
Playing with the Black pieces, Arjun found an edge but Carlsen fought back before blundering under time pressure. Arjun seized the opportunity, sacrificing his Queen, which led to Carlsen's resignation and a 3.5-2.5 win for defending champions MGD1 over WR Chess.
Carlsen's troubles continued on Day 2, as he lost his next game to Shant Sargsyan. Arjun attributed his win to a series of mistakes made by Carlsen, including a sacrifice that ultimately backfired.
Other notable results from the day include a 177-move game between Ding Liren and Richard Rapport, which Ding ultimately lost. Ding drew against Indian GM Praggnanandhaa, which was enough for his team Dragon Chilling to stay unbeaten and take the lead. Iranian-French GM Alireza Firouzja celebrated his 23rd birthday with a perfect run of four wins in four rounds.
