A bitter turf war is brewing in Indian golf. The Indian Golf Union (IGU), recognized by the Union Sports Ministry and International Golf Federation, has asserted its authority to select the Indian team for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games and other multi-discipline events. This move comes as a result of two separate elections held in December 2024, which led to the formation of two rival factions. The IGU has issued a statement, emphasizing that it is the sole body authorized to send entries for the Asian Games and other events. It has warned that any other group attempting to select teams will be considered invalid and may face legal consequences. The IGU points out that court orders have consistently validated its legitimacy and that of its governing body. The selection process for the Asian Games will be based on world rankings, the union added. The IGU has also criticized the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for supporting an 'illegal' group of individuals. The union believes that IOA's actions are motivated by malice and aim to create confusion within the sport. This power struggle has caused instability and factionalism within the golf fraternity. The IGU has urged IOA to respect the court's decisions and recognize the official governing body of golf in India.
