New Delhi: World Athletics (WA) has expressed concerns over the quality of synthetic tracks in India, prompting the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to oversee the track relaying process and ensure global standards are met.
AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla revealed that substandard materials are being used in over 90% of tracks in India, impacting athlete performance and track longevity.
Sumariwalla stated that the world body showed AFI officials 'shocking' data during a Tokyo meeting, highlighting issues with measurements, material, and laying methodology.
AFI will now help in certifying tracks and ensuring that all standards of measurement and quality are met, with a focus on selecting vendors with expertise to deliver quality athletics surfaces.
Currently, nine tracks in India have Class 1 certification, while 113 have Class 2 certification, with two new indoor tracks under construction.
India has several World Athletics-certified tracks, but poor quality tracks may not last their full course and impact athlete performances.
