New Delhi: Sahaja Yamalapalli's spirited fightback in the second singles against Thailand's Patcharin Cheapchandej has given India a glimmer of hope in the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup (Asia-Oceania Group 1) tie. The match was suspended due to heavy rain, with Patcharin leading 6-4, 1-6, 4-3.
India trails 1-0 in the tie, with Vaishnavi Adkar losing the opening singles to Anchisa Chanta 6-1, 6-3. However, Sahaja's determination has kept the tie on a knife's edge, with the doubles match to follow. If India can turn things around, Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale will look to secure the tie.
The conditions on the hard court were difficult after the morning showers, which also delayed the start by more than three hours. Vaishnavi, making her maiden appearance in the BJK Cup, was tentative and betrayed nerves, while Anchisa showed her experience and adaptability to win the first set.
The tie will resume on Wednesday morning, with India hoping to capitalize on Sahaja's momentum and secure a crucial win against Thailand.
