India's male squash field has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, shifting from a one-man army to a troop of talented players pushing each other to excel individually and collectively. Four Indians currently feature in the world's top 50 men's PSA rankings: Abhay Singh (26th), Ramit Tandon (37th), Veer Chotrani (43rd), and Velavan Senthilkumar (51st).
The rise of Indian squash can be attributed to a growing talent pipeline, increased support from corporates and government, and more events at home, such as the Indian Open. The PSA's change in rankings from monthly to weekly has also contributed to the competitive environment, allowing players to gain ground quickly.
Abhay Singh, currently the India No.1, is motivated by the presence of his compatriots, who are close behind him in the rankings. He sees their proximity as a challenge to stay on top and uses it as motivation to improve. Veer Chotrani, who is motivated by having two compatriots ahead of him, believes that the close competition makes the sport more interesting and fun.
The Indian squash players have formed a tight-knit group, often socializing and supporting each other off the court. They will come together as a team at the Asian Games in Japan later this year, where they hope to defend their team gold and secure a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
While each player has personal goals to break into the top 20, their ultimate aim is to sustain their sporadic sparks of upset wins and deep runs in big events, which will take them to the next level individually and collectively for Indian squash.
