The Indian shooting team is gearing up for two crucial selection trials at the Karni Singh Shooting range in New Delhi, starting on Monday. However, rifle shooters will face an additional hurdle as the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has introduced new specifications for clothing gear. The ISSF has set standards for the thickness and stiffness of rifle jackets and trousers, which will be enforced during the trials. The move aims to prevent 'technical doping' and promote physical ability and skills among shooters. In recent years, rifle clothing manufacturers have produced thicker and stiffer apparel, making some shooters rely more on their gear for performance. This has led to lower emphasis on balance, stability, and technique. Top shooters like Paris Olympics bronze medallist Swapnil Kusale and world championships silver medallist Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar have been preparing for the trials, but they are now concerned about their clothing gear meeting the ISSF specifications. The new rules will require shooters to rely more on their body balance and stability, as the clothing support will be significantly reduced. According to coach Deepak Dubey, the shooters are worried about their gear being cleared at the equipment control room, especially in the peak winter season when clothes become stiff. He advises shooters to make adjustments in their existing clothing to bring it to ISSF specifications. The change in clothing rules is expected to affect second-runners-up shooters who often replace their clothing. They will have to step up their physical and skills to adapt to the new regulations. National rifle head coach Deepali Deshpande believes that elite shooters will take some time to adapt, but they will eventually adjust to the changes. The selection trials will be a test for Indian shooters as they prepare to compete in the Asian Games and World Championships, which will also offer quota places for the 2028 LA Olympics. The ISSF's new clothing rules will undoubtedly challenge the shooters, but it will also promote a more balanced and skilled approach to the sport.
