It was a chaotic FIFA World Cup 2026 opener at the Estadio Azteca as Mexico came out on top in a 2-0 win.

Julian Quinones gave Mexico the lead in the ninth minute.

He could have scored another goal, but his other effort hit the post in the first half.

Then in the second half, striker Raul Jimenez made it 2-0 in the 67th minute, heading in a cross.

Meanwhile, the second half also saw red card chaos, with three players sent off.

South Africans Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off, and so was Mexico's Cesar Montes.

This edition is set to be historic, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, and marks the first time the tournament has been expanded from 32 to 48 national teams.

The opening game was also a rematch of the 2010 World Cup opener, when hosts South Africa faced Mexico in a dramatic 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.
