A former athletic trainer at North Carolina State University, Robert Murphy, is at the center of a growing controversy after multiple former student-athletes accused him of sexual abuse.
The allegations target Murphy, who worked with NC State's athletic programs for years, and is now accused by several former athletes of inappropriate conduct during medical treatment.
The alleged misconduct involved inappropriately stroking their genitalia and putting the players through unconventional drug testing methods, where Murphy made them almost completely nude while he watched.
Eleven men have come out and spoken against Murphy, with nine involved in an ongoing legal lawsuit against the institution. The allegations started in 2013 and continued until 2024.
Murphy left the university in 2022 after a Title IX investigation and a state criminal investigation were triggered by a complaint from former soccer player Ben Locke.
According to the former players, Murphy would frequently visit the locker room and showers, which was unusual for other coaches and trainers.
There has been no indication of any criminal charges or conviction in the case, as the allegations are part of a civil lawsuit.
