Vaishali R is still in disbelief after her historic win at the Women's Candidates tournament in Cyprus. The 24-year-old Indian emerged champion, becoming only the second player from the country to qualify for the Women's World Championship match.

HT spoke to Vaishali after her win, and she expressed her gratitude to the people around her who helped her keep going despite a tough 2025. She credits yoga, meditation, and working with a psychologist for her mental preparation.

Vaishali's journey to the top has been a long one, with her brother Praggnanandhaa being a constant source of support and guidance. She credits him with helping her with preparation and being her go-to person, not just for chess, but emotionally too.

Vaishali will now face five-time world champion Ju Wenjun in the Women's World Championship match. Despite having three draws and one loss against her in classical chess, Vaishali is confident that she can match the top players at her best.
