Indian chess sensation Vaishali Rameshbabu has made history by becoming the second Indian woman to qualify for the World Chess Championship. The 24-year-old secured her spot in the title match with a thrilling win over Kateryna Lagno in the final round of the Women's Candidates tournament.
With this achievement, Vaishali joins the ranks of Koneru Humpy, who was the first Indian woman to qualify for the World Championship in 2011. Vaishali's victory marks a significant milestone in Indian chess, as she becomes the first Indian player to win the Women's Candidates tournament.
Vaishali's journey to the top was not without its challenges. She started the tournament on a shaky note, going winless in the first five rounds. However, she found her stride and a touch of luck, which helped her navigate the competition and secure her spot in the title match.
Speaking about her achievement, Vaishali expressed her happiness and gratitude, saying, 'I'm very happy and speechless...This is a dream moment for me.'
Vaishali will now face five-time world champion Ju Wenjun in the World Championship match, while her fellow Indian player Gukesh will take on Javokhir Sindarov for the world title. This is a historic moment for Indian chess, as two Indians will be battling for world titles later this year.
