Wrexham, Wales - In a move that will further propel the Welsh soccer club towards the Premier League, Wrexham's celebrity owners, American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have partnered with Apollo Sports Capital, a US-based private equity firm. The investment will see Apollo contribute to the redevelopment of Wrexham's stadium and surrounding area. Wrexham, the oldest club in Wales, dating back to 1864, has made significant strides in recent years, securing three consecutive promotions to reach the second-division Championship for the current season. This season, the team sits at 12th place in the 24-team standings, a notable improvement from their last stint in the second division in the 1981-82 season. The partnership with Apollo Sports Capital comes as Wrexham's ownership continues to drive the club's growth and sustainability. Reynolds and McElhenney, who purchased the club in 2021, aim to take Wrexham to the Premier League while remaining true to the town's spirit. Apollo's investment is seen as a significant boost to this ambition. This is not the first investment in Wrexham by an American-based group, as Reynolds and McElhenney sold a stake to a different US investment group last year. Apollo has also made headlines with its recent acquisition of a majority stake in Spanish soccer club Atletico Madrid, a deal expected to be finalized early next year.
