The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, from January 9 to 11. A deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to cross Sri Lanka by January 10, bringing with it a mix of yellow and orange alerts for various districts. According to the IMD, the deep depression moved northwestwards at a speed of 8 kmph and was centred about 550 km south-southeast of Chennai on January 9. It is predicted to weaken into a depression before moving west-northwestwards and crossing the north Sri Lanka coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna. The IMD has issued a high wave alert for Nagapattinam and Karaikal, with waves expected to be 2.7-3.1 meters high. The Regional Met Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore on January 10, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining areas along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till January 10. For January 11, the IMD predicts heavy rainfall in isolated areas over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Villupuram. The minimum temperatures are expected to remain normal or below normal over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till January 11. The IMD has also warned of squally weather with wind speeds reaching 55-65 kmph along the Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka coast, and the Gulf of Mannar, with rough sea conditions expected over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the east equatorial Indian Ocean.
