In a ruling made on Friday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration's move to freeze federal funds for child care subsidies and other support programs for needy families in five Democratic-led states. California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York, which receive over $10 billion annually from these programs, argued that the freeze was creating 'operational chaos' and had no legal basis. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had claimed that it was pausing the funding due to concerns that the states might be granting benefits to individuals in the country illegally, but provided no evidence to support this claim. The affected programs include the Child Care and Development Fund, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, and the Social Services Block Grant. These initiatives provide essential support to low-income families and individuals in need. The ruling, made by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, will remain in place until further court arguments are made. It marks a temporary reprieve for the five states, which will continue to receive funding for now.
