Renowned filmmaker Muzaffar Ali is still reeling from the loss of legendary singer Asha Bhosle. He recalls the magic of her voice in his award-winning film Umrao Jaan (1981), which earned her a National Award for Best Playback Singer for Dil Cheez Kya Hai.
Ali remembers how Asha ji transported herself in the song, understanding its premise and era with uncanny precision. Her soulful voice elevated the film to new heights.
He also shares that Asha ji recorded five unreleased songs for his ambitious project Zuni, which could not see the light of day. The songs were recorded in the late '80s with the same team, including Khayyam and Shahryar.
Ali hopes to revive the project and release the songs, which he believes are truly amazing. He also recalls meeting Asha ji for the songs and her emotional reaction when she heard them.
Ali met Asha ji during the launch of his book and re-release of his film in Mumbai. He fondly remembers her serving them self-cooked kebabs at her home, a memory he cherishes dearly.
