The 2008 Hindi remake of Ghajini, starring Aamir Khan, marked a significant shift in Indian cinema, popularizing the mass action template and paving the way for numerous similar remakes. However, what if Salman Khan had been cast in the lead role instead? Producer Boney Kapoor recently shared his experience of trying to acquire the remake rights for Ghajini in the mid-2000s, with the Bollywood star in mind. According to Kapoor, he was inspired by Salman's performance in Tere Naam and believed he would be perfect for the role of Suriya in the original Tamil film. Kapoor reached out to Madhu Mantena, who was friends with the film's distributor, Allu Aravind, to procure the remake rights. However, Mantena kept Kapoor in the dark for six months, assuring him that the deal would go through, only to have Aamir Khan eventually secure the role. Kapoor lost out on the opportunity, and the film went on to become a massive success, earning over ₹100 crore net domestically and starting the 100-crore club. Ghajini's success story serves as a testament to the power of Aamir Khan's star power and the enduring appeal of the mass action template in Indian cinema.
