Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar has revealed that he was approached to work on the sequel to the 1997 film Border but declined, citing 'intellectual and creative bankruptcy.' Akhtar expressed his disappointment with the decision to rework original songs from the first film, releasing them as part of the new movie. The lyricist, who penned the iconic songs for the original Border, believes that reusing old material is a sign of creative stagnation. He emphasized the importance of creating new songs for a sequel, saying, 'If you can make a new movie, why can't you create new songs?' Akhtar drew parallels with the 1964 film Haqeeqat, which featured timeless classics like 'Kar chale hum fida' and 'Main yeh sochkar uske dar se utha tha.' He noted that the original film's makers chose to write new songs instead of relying on the past, and that the same approach should be applied to Border 2. Directed by Anurag Singh and starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh, Border 2 is set to release on January 23, ahead of Republic Day. The film is inspired by the 1971 India-Pakistan War and features a star-studded cast, including Mona Singh and Sonam Bajwa. While the sequel's reworked songs may be a hit with some fans, Javed Akhtar's comments have sparked a debate about the value of creative originality in filmmaking.
