Music composer Amaal Mallik has shed light on the financial struggles faced by Hindi film music industry professionals. In an interview with Pinkvilla, he revealed the stark contrast between the earnings of Hindi and South Indian music composers. Mallik, who has been a part of numerous hit Bollywood films, cited the example of Sooraj Dooba Hain, which earned ₹60-70 crore for the label but left him with negligible profits, less than ₹1 crore. According to Mallik, the disparity in earnings is due to the fact that South Indian composers retain their rights, earning between ₹10-15 crore per project. In contrast, Hindi composers receive ₹2-3 crore and surrender their rights. Mallik emphasized the need for financial freedom to pursue philanthropic endeavors and expressed his frustration with the industry's lack of equal rights for composers. Mallik also spoke about his personal struggles, revealing that he was the first composer to demand credit in 2004, a fight that has since become the norm in Bollywood. He shared that he faced numerous challenges, including court cases and being dropped from 40-45 films in the last five years. Despite these setbacks, Mallik continues to be a prominent figure in the industry, having composed music for films like Jai Ho, Roy, and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, among others.
