The release of Malayalam actor Dileep's upcoming film Bha Bha Ba, featuring a cameo by Mohanlal, has sparked controversy. The film's trailer was released after Dileep's acquittal in the 2017 actress assault case. Bhagyalakshmi, an actor and dubbing artiste, has criticized Mohanlal for promoting the film, calling it 'insensitive' and 'thoughtless'. Bhagyalakshmi expressed her concerns at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), stating that Mohanlal's actions sent a negative message to survivors of assault. She questioned whether Mohanlal had considered the timing of his promotional activities, given the recent acquittal verdict. Bhagyalakshmi emphasized that this was not just about cinema, but about ethics and the choices people make in public. Dileep's acquittal has also been met with criticism, with Bhagyalakshmi accusing him of being jubilant and attacking his former wife, Manju Warrier, who had supported the investigation. Bhagyalakshmi claimed that Manju would have suffered if the survivor had not come forward with her account. The 2017 actress assault case was a highly publicized incident that led to the creation of the Women in Cinema Collective and the formation of the Hema Committee. The case's trial began in 2018 and continued for eight years, with six individuals found guilty and three others, including Dileep, acquitted. The Kerala government has announced plans to appeal against the acquittal verdict in higher courts, and the film industry remains divided over the issue. Bhagyalakshmi's comments highlight the ongoing debate about accountability and ethics in the Malayalam film industry.
