Recently released jail calls and text messages have shed new light on the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 21-year-old Ohio woman serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in prison for the murders of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.
The new evidence, made public by the Strongsville Police Department, has sparked renewed attention due to Netflix's new series The Crash, which explores Shirilla's case.
Prosecutors allege that Shirilla intentionally drove her Toyota Camry into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022, with Russo and Flanagan as passengers.
Shirilla's legal representatives have contended that medical evidence may substantiate her assertion that she lost consciousness prior to the crash, citing Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) as a possible explanation.
However, other communications between Shirilla and Russo depict a more troubled relationship, with Shirilla expressing concerns about blackouts and sending messages threatening to harm herself and others.
In related news, Shirilla's father, Steve Shirilla, has been placed on administrative leave from his position at a Catholic school due to his involvement in the documentary.
