Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International has announced director Cibi Chakaravarthi as the new helmer for the highly anticipated Rajinikanth-starrer, titled Thalaivar 173. This development comes after Sundar C's exit from the project due to unforeseen circumstances. The film is expected to release during Pongal 2027. Cibi Chakaravarthi, who made his Kollywood debut with the 2022 coming-of-age comedy Don, has expressed his gratitude towards Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for entrusting him with this project. The director has been a long-time fan of the Tamil superstar and has spoken fondly of their interactions. The production house had initially announced Sundar C as the director, but he stepped down from the project on November 13, citing unforeseen circumstances. The news was met with speculation, but Kamal Haasan clarified that the decision was made to ensure the film's script was to Rajinikanth's liking. Thalaivar 173 is one of the most highly anticipated films in the industry, with both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan teasing their collaboration since before the release of Coolie in 2025.
