Veteran filmmaker P Bharathiraja, a towering figure in Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 84. He was known for injecting raw, rural realism into Tamil screenplays, breaking away from studio-bound filmmaking. Bharathiraja had been battling age-related ailments and respiratory complications for several months.
With a career spanning nearly five decades, he helmed over 40 feature films across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages. His films often explored rural dramas, psychological thrillers, and social commentaries, earning him six National Film Awards and numerous other accolades.
Bharathiraja was also a masterful star-maker, introducing a generation of performers who went on to shape Indian cinema. He was widely recognised for his unique grooming school, where he rechristened lead actors with names starting with the letter 'R', launching the careers of iconic artistes like Radikaa and Revathi.
As news of his passing spread, the Indian film industry and political circles mourned the loss of a visionary who gave voice to the soil of Tamil Nadu. Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, Chandraleela, and daughter, Janani.
