The recent box office success of two patriotic films, Dhurandhar and Chhaava, has sparked a debate about whether 'patriotism' is a guaranteed formula for success in Bollywood. However, actor Vicky Kaushal, star of Chhaava, disagrees. In an exclusive interview, he stated that 'patriotism can't be a formula' and that reducing it to one is an insult to the emotion. Vicky believes that making patriotic films is a way for filmmakers to showcase their pride in the country. 'It's a way for us to put our foot in the door and say that we are proud of the diversity, legacy, and truth of our country,' he said. Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, tells the story of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his battles with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The film, which grossed ₹807 crore worldwide, stars Vicky as Sambhaji Maharaj and Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb. On the other hand, Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, is a spy thriller starring Ranveer Singh as an Indian operative infiltrating Pakistan's gangs and dismantling their ties to the terror network. The film, which has already made ₹845 crore in 17 days at the box office, also stars Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sanjay Dutt. Despite their differences in plot, both films have one thing in common: their strong undercurrents of nationalism and patriotism. Vicky's comments highlight the importance of genuine storytelling and the need to avoid reducing complex emotions like patriotism to a simple formula.
