Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has offered a boost to new films in the state by allowing theatres to run five shows per day for a film's first week of release.
The decision comes after a meeting between the film industry and the CM, where they presented various demands, including allowing five screenings per day.
Under the Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatres (Regulation) Rules, 1957, four screenings are permitted per day, with an additional special screening allowed during local festivals and public holidays.
However, Vijay has amended the rules to allow five screenings daily for seven days from the date of release of newly released Tamil films and five screenings daily on local festivals and public holidays.
Producers no longer need to obtain permission from the government and licensing officer to do this, reducing the hassle of bookings opening late and uncertainty around film release timings.
Fans and theatres have thanked Vijay for the announcement, with some expressing excitement for the upcoming release of his film Jana Nayagan on June 19.
