US President Donald Trump announced that Welles Remy Crowther, the 9/11 hero known as the 'Man in the Red Bandana,' will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Crowther, a 24-year-old equities trader and volunteer firefighter, made repeated trips inside the World Trade Center's South Tower to guide people to safety before its collapse, saving as many as 18 lives.

He was last seen wearing a red bandana given to him by his father, which became closely associated with his story and heroism.

Crowther's mother, Alison, joined Trump on stage during the announcement and reflected on how her son's legacy continues to inspire people nearly 25 years later.
