Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting of a 9-year-old Australian girl of Pakistani origin in Pakistan.

The girl, Hania, was killed and her father and brother critically injured when police 'mistakenly' opened fire on their car in the Punjab province.

The family, who were on vacation, had stopped to help two armed men on a motorcycle who were trying to rob them, but the police thought the family was the robbers and opened fire.

Australia expects transparency and a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Punjab Police are conducting a 'thorough and impartial investigation' and have said there was 'absolutely no justification' for deviating from their established protocols.

The incident has sent shockwaves across both Australia and Pakistan, and Hania's school community in Perth is providing counselling assistance to support staff and students.
