A bystander struck by gunfire after a fatal shooting near the White House remains in serious but stable condition.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, was fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service officers after opening fire at a security checkpoint.
Best, a track and field athlete from Maryland, had a previous run-in with law enforcement near the White House and was arrested last July for attempting to enter White House grounds.
President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time of the shooting and has since promoted a $1 billion security addition for the White House campus, including a ballroom he is seeking to build.
